When building a pool, we see many people add spas to their design for a variety of reasons. Some may want a spa to relax in at the end of the day, others for the sheer enjoyment of it. Whatever the reason, there are actually a lot of health benefits to pool spas, both mental and physical. Here are a few of the benefits you’ll get out of adding a spa onto your dream pool.
Better Sleep
Quality sleep plays an important role in your overall health and well-being. In fact, it has been proven that maintaining a regular sleep schedule that provides quality REM sleep benefits not only your mind but also your body. It improves your immune system, rejuvenates your muscles, increases your metabolism and heightens mental alertness. So how does this tie into owning a spa? According to the National Sleep Foundation, your body will ease into sleep easier with a drop in body temperature. By raising your body temperature in a spa before bed, your body temperature will be regulated to a comfortably warm level that helps in falling asleep longer and staying asleep. Just make sure you don’t use the spa too close to when you plan on crawling into bed. Soak in your spa about 90 minutes before you plan to go to bed for around 20-30 min. This allows for your body temperature to increase and then have time to drop and ease you into a long night’s sleep.
Exercise & Lower Blood Pressure
Did you know that soaking in a spa stimulates exercise? Just like exercise, your heart rate will quicken as the increased water temperature makes your heart work a little bit harder and faster. The good news is, this increase in blood pressure occurs only briefly. As the hot water raises your internal body temperature, your vessels and cells dilate, decreasing the resistance to your heart. This improves your circulation and then brings your blood pressure back down. Sitting in a spa regularly results in lower blood pressure and provides the benefits of exercise less stress to your heart. The short time your heart rate rises also increases blood flow which produces extra oxygen which revitalizes cells and ultimately leaves you feeling rejuvenated and relaxed.
Alleviate Pain
According to Spine Health, the overall qualities of warmth and heat have long been associated with comfort and relaxation, heat therapy goes a step further and can provide both pain relief and healing benefits for many types of lower back pain. A spa may not cure pain disorders completely but soaking in a spa can significantly reduce chronic pain and provide relief. Those that suffer from joint pain, arthritis and muscle inflammation can benefit greatly from regularly soaking in hot water.
Hydrotherapy is also highly beneficial to alleviating chronic pain, whether from a condition or an injury. Smaller jets in spas can be utilized to pinpoint problem areas and provide soothing relief to aching joints and muscles just like a massage.
Stress & Anxiety Relief
Stress and anxiety are things we all experience now and again, that, if not taken care of, can lead to more problems in life and with your health. Stress can lead to increased blood pressure as well as increase a blood pressure and hinder blood circulation. As mentioned above, a soak in a spa can reverse both of these symptoms, lowering blood pressure and increasing circulation. Spas also can provide relief form mental and physical stress, helping you relax therefore decreasing anxiety.
Improved Skin Care
Did you know that soaking regularly in a spa can improve your skin? The increased blood flow and circulation helps eliminate the harmful toxins your body accumulates and helps your cells get rid of waste. The rising steam from spas also opens up your pores, helping to rejuvenate and heal your skin and the hot water acts as a deep cleanser, washing away dead skin cells and bacteria. The reduced stress benefit of spas also helps reduce breakouts caused by stress and anxiety. Make sure you don’t soak for too long; however, as staying in the hot water for extended periods can have the opposite effect and actually dry out your skin. A good 20-30-minute soak should be all that is needed to leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
