When you’re planning the design of your new pool, one of the most fun parts of the process is choosing the size and shape of your pool. There are so many options to choose from, however, that it can become a bit overwhelming. There are many factors that go into selecting the size and shape of a pool. How many people will be using the pool? What is your landscape like surrounding the area where the pool will be installed? What is your personal taste when it comes to free-flowing lines, curves or angles? Whatever your preference or large or small the number of people using is, there is a pool shape that is perfect for you!
Pool Design Options
Free Form
One of the most popular pool shapes, a free form pool is rounded and shaped to fit right into your backyard. They come in no particular shape, but are rather molded according to the space available, the surrounding terrain and artistic preference. In line with its name, free form pools are free flowing in design and do not fit into any other category. They are also a perfect option for a yard that’s starting off as a blank slate. You are able to customize the landscaping to fit the flow of the pool, from palm trees to sun shelves…. the possibilities are endless.
Geometric
If you like sharp lines and clean corners, then a geometric pool design is for you. The geometric pool shape compliments many homes’ architectural style and is ideal playing water volleyball and swimming laps. They are typically a specific shape, such as a square, rectangle, a combination of the two, or an L shape with sharp lines and straight edges, offering a more contemporary feel. Geometric pools are also extremely customizable and easily accessorized with spas, slides, waterfalls and sun shelves.
Grecian
Grecian style pool design combines a rectangular shape where the angled corners are rounded. An “authentic Grecian” pool basically cuts off the 90-degree corners of the rectangle, forming an octagon. A more popular Grecian shape, however, is one where the 90-degree corners are replaced with an inward rounding.
Lap Pools
Lap pools are an excellent way to add a pool to a smaller space and are a great choice for those who want to use their pool for exercise and swimming laps. Lap pools are long and narrow, rectangular in shape and can be as long as your lot will allow. They are the perfect solution for homes that have narrow or shallow residential lots and especially for homeowners that want to exercise in the privacy of their own yard.
Infinity Edge
Infinity pools boast a dramatic pool design effect where it looks as though the pool is overflowing over the edge into the distance. What is actually happening is the water is flowing over the pool’s weir wall into a trough that is hidden, taking the water and recycling it back into the pool. Infinity edge pools are great for homes that overlook amazing scenery such as rivers, mountains, oceans or city skylines but are also great for homes that are surrounded by nature such as palm trees and wooded glens. This pool design definitely brings an element of magic into anyone’s backyard!
These are just some of the pool design options you have, but, in the end, you want to make sure your swimming pool is designed for your property and most importantly YOU! When your pool project is complete, you should feel a sense of harmony in the space and that it is an extension of your home, your landscaping and outdoor structures. There should be nothing but smiles and happiness as you enter your new favorite outdoor spot that you created with your pool builder. For more design ideas, check out our pool and spa gallery!
