The temperatures are finally getting cooler in Central Florida. This means pool temperatures are getting colder, leading to less swimming if no swimming at all. Instead of jumping in the pool to cool off, we’re thinking about bundling up and having the first fire of the season. That is, unless, you’re lucky enough to have a heated pool or the less common indoor pool. The good news is, even if your pool has been winterized for the season, there are still ways to get your pool fun fix in the winter months!
Host a Winter Pool Party
Even if the weather may make it too cold to swim, here in Florida we still have warmer climates than most. Fall and Winter are the best seasons to enjoy the outdoors without sweating! This means that the space around your pool is still a great area to gather with friends and family and host a party. You never know, someone may end up jumping in the pool anyway!
You can also decorate the area around the pool for the different holidays or just make it seasonal. Lighting is a great way to make the area around your pool feel like the holidays have arrived. For Thanksgiving, hang fall colored garland and place pumpkins around your garden or landscape. Come Christmas, run some twinkling strands of lights around your pool area and watch the holiday spirit come alive. Trim the trees and bushes with lights and ornaments. Break out the hot cocoa (or hot toddies *wink*) and cheers your friends as you continue to enjoy your outdoor oasis.
Take a Polar Plunge!
Like we said earlier, you may have someone that decides to jump in the pool at your party regardless of the cold. (We all have that one friend, right??) If you want to take your winter pool party to the next level, add the polar plunge challenge! You’ve probably seen videos of people that live in cold climates taking a dip in iced-over water. Luckily for us Floridians, we don’t have to deal with ice cold water – but it will still be shockingly cold. So, challenge your friends to take the polar plunge and create stories that you all will be talking about for years to come. Plus, jumping in cold water has some health benefits. Much like taking a cold shower, cold water immersion can increase energy levels, stimulate blood flow, and more.
If you have a heated or indoor pool you should still consider hosting a winter pool party. Your guests will get the best of both worlds: sipping hot cocoa AND taking a (not freezing) dip in the pool. The kids will love it! No matter what, know that there are options for getting your pool fix during the chillier months.
Winter Pool Reminder
Even during the colder months when people aren’t actively using the pool, proper pool maintenance is still important. Continue to regularly clean the pool and keep the water level mid-tile line. With the temperature fluctuations in Central Florida during the colder months, keep your eye out for algae bloom and build-up. Balance the pool’s water chemicals and run your pool four to six (4-6) hours every day. Circulating the water prevents algae build-up. Chlorine levels can be slightly reduced due to less people using the pool and water temperatures being lower.
